The heads of state of the Commonwealth of Independent States adopted a Statement on the Preservation Historical Memory. The document was signed at the summit on October 9, 2026 at the Avaza National Tourist Zone in Turkmenistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Statement notes that preserving historical memory is an effective means of countering all manifestations of discrimination, racism and xenophobia, as well as all forms of intolerance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The parties state that knowledge of history helps to identify in a timely manner and counter attempts to distort the past, spread disinformation and promote extremism, which undermine the foundations of peaceful coexistence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The leaders of the CIS member states recognise the need to critically assess the complex interrelationships between the past, present and future, and to ensure the historical accuracy of interpretations through a thorough study of sources and historical works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe call on the international community to join forces to preserve historical memory and historical truth, strengthen peace, mutual respect and trust among peoples; pass on to future generations the experience of peaceful and constructive cooperation in accordance with universally recognised norms of international law, as well as consistently uphold the principle that nazism, fascism and other destructive ideologies must not be glorified,\u201d the Statement reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Statement sets out the intention to expand cooperation in historical awareness and education on the basis of open, honest, professional and depoliticised dialogue. This is to be achieved by promoting commemorative dates; protecting historical and memorial sites that reflect key stages in the development of relations among the CIS member states; organising specialised events, and expanding and deepening contacts among scholars, archivists, archaeologists, historical search groups, youth movements and volunteer organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Statement also addresses the development of cooperation within the International Association (Commission) of Historians and Archivists of the CIS Member States and the promotion of joint initiatives to preserve historical memory at global and regional international forums.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
