From the first intergovernmental agreements to the creation of a comprehensive system of professional and institutional mechanisms for interaction.

The foundation for information cooperation was laid by the Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Information, signed by the heads of government of the CIS countries in Bishkek on October 9, 1992. This document defined a long-term strategy for the formation of a unified information space for the Commonwealth. A significant milestone was the establishment of the Interstate Television and Radio Broadcasting Company «Mir» (MTRK «Mir») on October 9, 1992, designed to meet the CIS countries needs for information on the basis of equality and mutual respect.

In addition to MTRK Mir, the architecture of the CIS information interaction is formed by three key bodies that ensure coordination at a professional level. The Council of Heads of State News Agencies (CIS Information Council), formed in 1995, unites nowadays the heads of state news services of eight countries and aims to create conditions for the unhindered dissemination of information and the exchange of professional experience. The Council of Heads of State and Public Television and Radio Organizations, established in 2007, coordinates the interaction in the field of television and radio broadcasting. The Interstate Council for Cooperation in the Field of Periodicals, Book Publishing and Printing, formed in 1999, is responsible for the development of the cooperation in this area.

In 2008, the Council of Heads of State and Public Television and Radio Broadcasting Organizations decided to start the Interstate Information Pool (IIP) based on the Mir TV and Radio Broadcasting Company. The primary objective of the IIP participants was to create a common television information space for the Commonwealth through the free exchange of video clips about life in the CIS countries.

In the anniversary years of 2025 (the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War) and 2026 (the 35th anniversary of the CIS), special attention is being paid to information coverage of key events and joint efforts to preserve historical truth, combat the falsification of history, and the glorification of fascism.

The current stage of cooperation in the information sphere is characterized by several priority areas:

— Countering information threats: In the face of massive external information pressure, Commonwealth countries develop joint measures to ensure information security and combat disinformation and the spread of fake news.

— Digitalization and technological development: Projects to create integrated electronic information exchange systems, unify digital library resources and start a common database of the CIS states legal acts are actively developing.

— Enhancing professional competencies: The information services of the ministries of foreign affairs regularly regularly held journalistic exchanges, professional training courses, and consultations.

Strengthening of the common information space is considered the most important condition for the CIS successful integration, the rapprochement of the participating states and the preservation of common historical and cultural ties between the peoples of the Commonwealth.

Over the 35 years of its existence, the Commonwealth of Independent States has come a long way in developing cooperation in the information sphere.
